How to Play Baccarat: Complete Guide
Baccarat Basics
Baccarat is a card comparison game played between two hands: the Player and the Banker. Despite the names, you are not playing as either β you are betting on which hand will have a total closest to nine, or whether the result will be a Tie. Cards 2 through 9 carry face value, 10s and face cards are worth zero, and Aces count as one. When the total exceeds 9, only the second digit counts β so a hand of 7+8=15 is worth 5, not 15.
The Third Card Rule
The drawing of a third card is governed by fixed rules β neither the player nor the dealer has discretion. The Player draws a third card if their initial two-card total is 0β5; they stand on 6 or 7; and the game ends immediately (natural) on 8 or 9. The Banker's third-card decision is more complex: if the Banker's total is 0β2, they always draw; if 3β6, whether they draw depends on the Player's third card value; on 7 they always stand. These rules are enforced automatically in online live baccarat, so you never need to memorise them to play.
Betting Options and House Edge
Banker Bet: The statistically strongest bet in baccarat. The Banker wins approximately 45.86% of hands and the house charges a 5% commission on winning Banker bets. After commission, the house edge is just 1.06% β one of the lowest in any live casino game.
Player Bet: Pays even money with no commission. Wins approximately 44.62% of hands for a house edge of 1.24%. Slightly weaker than Banker statistically but preferred by players who dislike commission deductions.
Tie Bet: Pays 8:1. Wins approximately 9.52% of hands for a house edge of 14.36%. The Tie bet should be avoided by players focused on long-term value β it is the worst bet at the table by a significant margin.
Side Bets: Lightning Baccarat adds Lightning multipliers (2xβ512x) randomly applied to certain outcomes. Baccarat Squeeze adds a ritual reveal of the cards. Dragon Tiger is a simplified variant where only one card per side is dealt.
Baccarat Strategy Tips
The optimal baccarat strategy is simple: always bet Banker, accept the 5% commission, and manage your bankroll with fixed session limits. Card counting does not work in online baccarat because decks are reshuffled frequently. Pattern tracking (road maps) β the bead plate, big road, small road, and cockroach road displayed on screen β shows historical results but has no predictive value since each hand is statistically independent. The roads exist for entertainment and pacing, not strategy. For disciplined play, set a loss limit per session and walk away when reached rather than chasing losses with higher stakes.
Live Baccarat Singapore — Why Play at Maxim88
Baccarat accounts for over 60% of all casino revenue in Macau and a significant share of online gambling activity in Singapore. Its appeal lies in simplicity β three betting options, low house edge, and fast rounds that average under 60 seconds β combined with the social atmosphere of a live dealer table. At live casino Singapore platform Maxim88, the baccarat section runs 24 hours a day with multiple tables open simultaneously, eliminating the waiting time common at physical casinos.
Lightning Baccarat: Why It Dominates
Lightning Baccarat by Evolution Gaming is the most-played live table at Maxim88. Before each round, one to five random multipliers of 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, or 8x are attached to specific card values. If a multiplier card appears in the winning hand, the payout is multiplied accordingly β up to 512x for a natural 8 or 9 with all multipliers stacked. The trade-off is a 20% fee on winning bets to fund the lightning mechanic, but the potential returns make it consistently the most-played variant.
No Commission Baccarat
Traditional baccarat charges 5% commission on winning Banker bets. No Commission Baccarat eliminates this fee entirely but adjusts the Banker win payout to even money when the Banker wins with a total of exactly 6 β in that specific case, the Banker bet pays only 50% of the stake. Statistically, this results in a marginally higher house edge (1.46% vs 1.06%) but many players prefer the simplified payout structure that avoids tracking commission chips across sessions.
Speed Baccarat
Speed Baccarat compresses the round time to approximately 27 seconds by dealing cards face-up immediately and eliminating the slower squeeze reveal ritual. All bets, rules, and RTPs are identical to classic baccarat. It is the preferred variant for high-volume players who want to maximise hands played per hour, and for mobile players who prefer faster pacing during shorter sessions.
Mobile Baccarat at Maxim88
All live baccarat tables are fully optimised for iOS and Android without requiring an app download. The mobile interface adapts the table layout to portrait or landscape mode, displays the road map history clearly, and supports touch betting. Minimum bets from S$1 per hand make mobile baccarat accessible for casual sessions as well as serious play. Stream quality adjusts automatically based on connection speed to maintain playability across 4G and 5G networks common in Singapore.
